One of the greatest lessons on the fleeting nature of things was provided by Mark Sandman's untimely death. A few years I had just gotten out of a hellacious day at work, and after getting home I realized that Morphine was playing a gig at a local club, I decided to take a shower and get ready to head to the club, well in the end I ended up falling asleep on my couch and missing the show. I was bummed that I missed it but took comfort in knowing they'd be back around sooner or later. Then roughly a monthy or two later I heard the tragic news that Mark had died. It bummed me out but also taught me a valuable lesson about taking anything in this world for granted.

I agree. I think weightlessness was always an underlying part of what they were doing. (Head with wings. Sundayafternoon weightlessness.) I was in Denmark at the time of Death and didn't know the cause for a couple of years. I didn't really want to know. On 9/9/99 I suppose Sandman was sitting on the back portch sippin' red wine and eating french fries with pepper after all.
