I hope there is still some disciples of Morphine using this site... I was fortunate enough to have seen them twice(both times that they came to Australia) before Marks' untimely passing. The experience was life-changing. Their sound was unique and projected images of late nights(and early mornings) spent in tiny underground jazz clubs with nothing more than a packet of cigarettes, a bottle of red wine and a love for all that is dark and brooding. Im glad Dana and Billy have continued making music with Twinemen, albeit with a more cabaret sound(with the inclusion of Laurie Sargent on vocals).Morphine showed us that jazz didn't have to be happy, swinging music like Miller or Brubek, they proved that you can find solace in the dark world of the unexpected where sometimes you just want to crawl inside an empty box... and still be happy with what you have. Regards, Rooster.

hi, im new to this tribe thing...anyway. I love Morphine, im in australia and boy! is it hard to find their music here . Some people told me they found morphine 'depressing' when i previewed some to them, whilst i found it sad, it was never depressing. They have so many cool songs... some so abstract that you just get lost in their meaning (or lackof).

Similar to Morphine?

I have always thought Morphine's absolutely brilliant combination of instruments made for an amazing sound. I'm sure most of you agree. Do any of you know anything similar?

I would really dig finding some new tunes that have a similar deep dark rich smokey lusty presence like Morphine's.

What do you think?

Possibly some of Tom Waits music does, what else?

Anyone else heard the car commercial (can't remember who it is) featuring "Buena"?? It's kind of disturbing to hear your favorite songs in commercials but it's cool at the same time.

Morphine gave me a great lesson on impermenance

One of the greatest lessons on the fleeting nature of things was provided by Mark Sandman's untimely death. A few years I had just gotten out of a hellacious day at work, and after getting home I realized that Morphine was playing a gig at a local club, I decided to take a shower and get ready to head to the club, well in the end I ended up falling asleep on my couch and missing the show. I was bummed that I missed it but took comfort in knowing they'd be back around sooner or later. Then roughly a monthy or two later I heard the tragic news that Mark had died. It bummed me out but also taught me a valuable lesson about taking anything in this world for granted.

Morphine Shows

You know, I only managed to see Morphine twice, both times at the Charles Squares (?) fest in Cambridge. The first time was the first I had heard of them, and was blown away by Head With Wings and Candy.
I have the live album, but anyone know of any available bootlegs? I'd love to hear one of their sets from the Middle East or TT The Bears where they would start and just keep playing until last call.
Anyone know of any?
Chris

low guitar

I was unusually attracted to the sound of the band, especially the low guitar that Mark Sandman made and shared with the world. I saw them play on one of the first Conan O'Brian shows and bought the album. The point of this posting is, I kind of figured out how to play the low guitar but am searching for others that might know something about the tuning and the tritar he also played. I was at a performance and looked closely at the box he was stepping on, an "electro harmonix memory man". I tuned a bass with two E strings and slid along for several months until I figured it was only 8 notes played in 3 octaves with various slides. I learned the buena. I must say, SANDMAN did more with less than anyone I know. Try it yourself
